MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A shocking car theft in south Minneapolis turned into a desperate search on Monday when a thief drove off with a 4-year-old child still inside. The terrifying ordeal unfolded in broad daylight, leaving a mother frantic as police raced against time to locate the stolen vehicle and ensure the child’s safety. Though the child was found unharmed a short time later, the suspect managed to escape, and authorities are still searching for them.
Thief Takes Off with Young Child Inside
The incident happened around 2:10 p.m. on the 5500 block of 37th Avenue South.
A mother had briefly left her vehicle running with her two children, ages 6 and 4, inside. That’s when an unknown man approached, pulled the older child from the car, and sped off with the younger one still inside.
Minneapolis police immediately launched a citywide search, knowing every second counted.
Just 25 minutes later, officers located the stolen vehicle still running nearly a mile away on the 4500 block of 42nd Avenue South. The 4-year-old was found safe and was quickly reunited with their mother.
Suspect Remains at Large
By the time police arrived at the location where the car was abandoned, the suspect had already fled. Authorities have not yet made an arrest and are urging the public to stay alert for any suspicious activity.
Law enforcement officials stress the importance of never leaving a running vehicle unattended, especially with children inside. Crimes like these happen in an instant, turning an ordinary day into a parent’s worst nightmare.
As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
