LAS VEGAS, NV – A quiet Las Vegas, Nevada neighborhood turned into a crime scene in the early hours of February 17. A young man, barely 19, walked the streets with a loaded gun and a mind buzzing with violent urges. By morning, a stranger lay dead outside a Walgreens, a single bullet wound ending his life. The suspect, Joshua Martinez, now faces a murder charge after admitting to police he felt compelled to kill.

Deadly Encounter Unfolds in Coral Bay

The incident took place in front of a Walgreens on North Durango Drive, located in Las Vegas’s Coral Bay area.

Around 2:45 a.m., emergency responders received a 911 call about a man in distress. The caller mentioned the man might have overdosed on pills and could be suicidal, prompting a swift transfer to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the victim wrapped in a white sheet near the store’s steps, bleeding from a gunshot to the head. Despite attempts at CPR, he died at the scene.

Suspect Caught After Witness Steps Forward

A local resident awoke to strange sounds around 3 a.m. and later pointed police to Martinez as the shooter.

Authorities arrested the teen at his home soon after, where they recovered two handguns.

During questioning, Martinez opened up about his actions, revealing a troubling buildup of violent impulses intensified by alcohol.

A Night of Drinking Turns Fatal

Earlier that night, Martinez had been drinking, sparking a plan to steal his parents’ debit card for cash. His attempt failed at an ATM when he couldn’t enter the correct PIN.

Paranoid and agitated, he grew convinced a group of men in white were trailing him. Arming himself with two guns from home, he set out to confront them. Instead, he crossed paths with a lone stranger in a white hoodie.

The two struck up a conversation. Martinez asked if the man had seen anyone nearby, and the stranger requested to borrow his phone to reach a hospital. Martinez offered to walk him to a nearby facility, but the man insisted on a different one. They continued together, eventually resting on the Walgreens steps where their exchange took a dark turn.

A Confession Fuels the Killing

As they sat, Martinez revealed his urge to kill. The stranger admitted he sometimes felt the same and shared a story of once setting someone ablaze. That moment flipped a switch in Martinez’s mind.

He offered to buy the man a drink, stepped behind him, fired a single shot into his head, and fled home.

Teen Held Without Bail

Now detained at Clark County Detention Center, Martinez awaits a preliminary hearing set for April 4.

Charged with open murder using a deadly weapon, the 19-year-old remains behind bars without bail as the investigation continues.

  1. Ok hold up; … a “witness” pointed out the kid after waking up to “strange noises” around 3 am? That even make any sense to you?? How the hell is there going to be a witness, that you claim was sleeping; after the shooting took place?? What in the hell??
Ok no. The kid went home, was panicking, started packing a bag, his dad “your so called witness” was already awake “no one was sleeping and woken up by some “strange noise”, sees this and his son says, “I think I killed someone.”
Now I don’t know what events took place there after or how long his dad waited; but eventually his dad (they live right in the area) walks down to where his son (Joshua; the shooter) had told him where this happened at – when his dad had seen all the police activity (his son was already battling mental health issues) he knew what he had to do.
He went and informed them that it was his son that had shot and killed this man and where they would find him. I’m sure that has got to be the hardest thing that poor father will ever have to do; but knew he had to do what’s right.

  2. Pretty bizarre, huh, Lisa? You’re smart in pointing that out – we appreciate your insights! This is such a wild (and heartbreaking) story. We’re praying for everyone involved! Have a blessed week – and thanks again for reading 🙂 Jack and Kitty
