CONCORD, N.H. – On a quiet Saturday, a grocery store in New Hampshire became the scene of an unexpected visitor. A venomous snake, originally from the steamy forests of Ecuador, emerged from a shipment of bananas, catching workers off guard. State wildlife officials quickly stepped in to handle the slippery stowaway.

Snake Safely Captured

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department received a call about a reptile sighting at the store.

Conservation officers arrived and identified the intruder as an ornate cat-eye snake, a mildly venomous species.

The slithering sneak was carefully removed and relocated to Rainforest Reptile Shows in Massachusetts for safekeeping.

Ecuador’s Slithery Export

Known scientifically as Leptodeira ornata, this cunning crawler is a frequent sight in western Ecuador’s dry forests. It roams the trails of its native land almost nightly.

Yet, it somehow swapped its tropical home for a bunch of bananas destined for the U.S. Northeast.

Bananas Outnumber Snakes

Ecuador isn’t just home to snakes—it’s the world’s leading banana exporter.

In 2023, the country shipped out 6.7 million tons of the yellow fruit, raking in $4.51 billion, according to the Observatory for Economic Complexity. With so many bananas crossing borders, it’s no surprise a stealthy serpent hitched a ride.

Global Snake Stowaways

This isn’t the first time a snake has popped up uninvited. A family in the United Kingdom found a Florida-native reptile coiled in their couch cushions during a TV night. Though harmless, it sent pulses racing.

In Australia, a man faced a python—twice—emerging from his toilet, its constricting fame preceding it. Also in the Land Down Under, one unlucky soul stumbled upon over 100 venomous snakes, including 97 newborns, breeding in his backyard.

Thankfully residents in New Hampshire are safe and this stowaway snake has found a new home here in New England.
