MASSENA, NY — A Sunday drive to New York took an unexpected detour for two Canadian citizens when U.S. border agents spotted suspicious cargo in their vehicle — over 40 grams of what officials say tested positive for cocaine.
BORDER BUNGLE
Alexander Herbert, 35, and Logan Mackenzie Dyer-Charlebois, 28, caught the attention of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Massena on March 8 when they couldn’t produce proper travel documents.
This simple oversight led to a deeper inspection that would dramatically change their travel plans.
POWDER PROBLEMS
During a secondary vehicle search, CBP officers say they found multiple bags containing what field tests indicated was cocaine, weighing approximately 41 grams.
Drug paraphernalia was also reportedly found in the vehicle.
FROM BAD TO WORSE
“Our CBP officers work tirelessly, night and day, to stop dangerous drugs from entering the country,” stated Massena Port Director Robert Dwyer, praising his team’s vigilance at the northern border.
LEGAL TROUBLES MOUNT
Both Herbert and Dyer-Charlebois were taken into custody by CBP officers before being transferred to New York State Police custody. They now face multiple felony and misdemeanor narcotics possession charges.
As in all criminal cases, both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
