SYRACUSE, NY — A birthday party in New York turned deadly when a man strangled his childhood friend and then used her credit cards to buy an OnlyFans subscription, leading to his sentencing of 23 years to life in prison.

The Birthday Setup

Jhon Moises Chacaguasay-Ilbis, 21, orchestrated what appeared to be a thoughtful celebration at a Syracuse Airbnb for Joselyn Toaquiza’s 21st birthday in June 2024.

He arrived bearing gifts: new sneakers and miniature wine bottles adorned with “I love you” messages.

The Deadly Celebration

Surveillance footage captured the pair entering the rental property together.

Hours later, cameras recorded Chacaguasay-Ilbis leaving alone, carrying Toaquiza’s lifeless body. He proceeded to bury her in Lincoln Park, where she remained undiscovered for four days.

A Crime Without Explanation

Despite pleading guilty to the murder, Chacaguasay-Ilbis never revealed his motivation for the killing.

During his March 10, 2025 sentencing, Judge Ted Limpert expressed bewilderment at the senseless nature of the crime.

After the murder, Chacaguasay-Ilbis, who authorities say entered the United States illegally from Ecuador in 2022, used the victim’s credit cards for various purchases, including an OnlyFans subscription.

The Aftermath

Through a Spanish interpreter, Toaquiza’s family delivered an emotional statement at the sentencing, declaring they would never forgive their daughter’s killer.

Chacaguasay-Ilbis offered an apology, claiming he “wasn’t conscious” of his actions, but provided no explanation for the murder.

Following the tragedy, community members rallied to support Toaquiza’s family through an online fundraiser, enabling them to transport her remains back to Ecuador for burial in her homeland.
