SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A makeshift dental office running illegal operations from inside a residential home in New York has been shut down, with its operator now facing multiple felony charges. Yolany Y. Mejia Carranza, 55, allegedly performed complex dental surgeries without any medical license or proper training. According to Suffolk County police, she targeted mainly uninsured Hispanic community members, some of whom may have been undocumented immigrants.

Severe Patient Injuries

The unauthorized procedures left a trail of injured patients, with at least one person suffering permanent nerve damage resulting in partial facial paralysis. Police indicate Carranza attempted complicated dental work while using inadequate local anesthesia, putting patients at severe risk.

Disturbing Office Setup

Law enforcement officials found what they described as a complete dental operation inside the residence. The illegal clinic even stocked antibiotics obtained from overseas sources, raising additional concerns about patient safety.

Investigation Ongoing

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina emphasized that immigration status would not be questioned for any victims coming forward. Authorities believe more injured patients may exist and strongly encourage them to report their experiences to law enforcement.

Legal Proceedings

Carranza faces multiple counts of unauthorized practice of a profession. Following her Thursday arrest, she appeared for arraignment on Friday. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 1.

The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
