MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A brutal encounter unfolded just after noon on February 15 outside a bustling tobacco shop in south Minneapolis, Minnesota. A 47-year-old man lay motionless in the parking lot, struck down by a single punch that would claim his life days later. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Coby Levan Richardson, now faces serious charges tied to the violent death.
Charges Pile Up After Lethal Assault
Richardson, a Minneapolis resident, has been slapped with 2nd-degree murder, 1st-degree manslaughter, threats of violence, and 5th-degree assault charges.
The deadly incident took place at the Loon Smoke Shop, located on the 2500 block of Lyndale Avenue South.
Authorities arrived to find the victim unconscious, suffering from a facial wound, a fractured skull, and a brain bleed. Despite medical efforts, the man passed away on February 18.
Tensions Brewing Before the Punch
The altercation wasn’t a random clash.
Weeks earlier, on January 25, the victim, his brother, and a friend crossed paths with Richardson at a nearby business. There, Richardson allegedly demanded they buy him a drink, boasting about his past as a Chicago gangster with federal prison time. The situation escalated when his companions mimicked pulling triggers with their hands, prompting the group to leave feeling threatened.
On the day of the attack, the victim’s brother said Richardson spotted them at the smoke shop and vowed to end their lives moments before delivering the fatal blow.
A Punch, a Fall, and a Death
Witnesses described a swift and devastating sequence.
Richardson reportedly struck the victim in the face, sending him crashing backward onto the concrete. The man’s head hit the ground hard, leaving him unresponsive.
Surveillance footage backed up the account, showing Richardson fleeing in a vehicle after the assault.
Arrest and Criminal Past
Law enforcement caught up with Richardson on February 19, taking him into custody. Records confirm he spent a decade in federal prison starting in 2009, aligning with his earlier claims.
He now sits in Hennepin County Jail, held on $500,000 bail, his first court date was on Friday afternoon.
Justice in Motion
The parking lot punch that ended a life has set off a legal firestorm. As Minneapolis grapples with the aftermath, all eyes turn to the courtroom where Richardson’s fate will unfold.
