CHICAGO, IL – For one Chicago, Illinois resident, what should have been a routine flight from Taiwan to Bangkok turned into a terrifying ordeal when a passenger attempted to open the airplane door mid-flight. On December 19, a Thai Airways Airbus 320 was cruising at altitude when chaos erupted on board, as a man, later identified as a Thai national, became increasingly agitated. Fellow passengers watched in fear as he charged down the aisle, trying to open the aircraft’s door while struggling with crew members who tried to stop him.
Disturbance in the Sky
The incident unfolded during the flight’s cruising phase. The man’s actions caused immediate panic among the passengers, who screamed in terror when he attempted to open the door. He physically resisted as flight attendants tried to restrain him, adding to the chaotic scene.
Passengers and crew quickly reacted, managing to subdue the passenger and secure him in his seat for the remainder of the four-hour journey. Despite the frightening situation, the flight was able to continue without further incidents.
The Arrest and Investigation
Upon landing in Bangkok, authorities boarded the plane to apprehend the individual. Security footage captured the moment the man was taken into custody.
Local police, including Colonel Chakpong Nuchpadung, revealed that the passenger had a history of mental health issues, which had reportedly played a role in the outburst. Relatives of the man confirmed that he had received treatment for his condition but might have missed his medication. No drugs were found in his system following a test.
No Charges Filed Due to Mental Health Issues
While the man’s actions could have resulted in serious legal consequences, including prison time and fines, the authorities decided not to pursue charges.
Officials at Suvarnabhumi International Airport showed compassion, acknowledging the passenger’s mental health challenges. As no harm was caused during the flight, they chose not to take legal action. The situation ended with the man’s release into the care of his family, with the airport emphasizing their understanding of his condition and the lack of harm caused to others on the flight.
