The emergency began at 9:26 a.m. when Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received a frantic call from the tugboat crew.
Flames had engulfed their vessel near Pea Patch Island, a small landmass in the river’s flow. With no time to spare, watchstanders broadcast an urgent alert to mariners in the vicinity, calling for immediate assistance.
Rescue Efforts Launch
Coast Guard teams sprang into action, deploying crews from Station Philadelphia and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Atlantic City. Local agencies also rushed to the scene, bolstering the response.
