HATBORO, PA — At Hatboro-Horsham High School, English teacher Kristina Ulmer has introduced a unique project aimed at fostering empathy and reducing screen time among her Pennsylvania students.

A Teacher’s Tribute Turns into a Classroom Challenge

In 2018, following the tragic loss of her sister Katie in a car accident, Ulmer discovered over $100 in tips that Katie had earned shortly before her passing. Determined to honor her sister’s generous spirit, Ulmer sought a meaningful way to utilize the funds.

While teaching Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451,” a novel depicting a society obsessed with screens and lacking empathy, she conceived the “$20 Challenge.” Ulmer provided each student with $20 from her own resources, encouraging them to perform random acts of kindness in Katie’s memory.

Students Embrace the Spirit of Giving

The challenge quickly gained momentum, with students using their $20 to assist the homeless, support animal shelters, and surprise veterans with gifts. One group assembled a basket of treats for an orphanage.

A particularly touching story involved a student who, while visiting family in the Midwest, purchased doughnuts and distributed them to strangers on a street corner alongside her uncle. This experience resonated deeply with her, leading her to continue the tradition annually.

Community Support Amplifies the Impact

The initiative’s success attracted community donations, enabling Ulmer to sustain the project over the years. By the previous fall, students had completed over 350 acts of kindness in Katie’s honor.

Participants reflected on the profound impact of the challenge, noting that small gestures can significantly brighten someone’s day and that even modest amounts can make a difference.
