NASHVILLE, TN – Sandra Bullock is sounding the alarm on a wave of online impersonators posing as her and her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado. The star, 60, is making it clear to fans in Tennessee and across the nation: she does not use social media, and any account claiming otherwise is part of a scam targeting unsuspecting victims.
Fake Accounts Flood Facebook, Cause Chaos
The issue came to light after Gesine Bullock-Prado, 54, took to Facebook on Sunday to reveal the extent of the scam. She shared that she has been battling fake profiles that have caused emotional and financial harm.
“I spend multiple times a day reporting fakes, dealing with weird & scary emails to my BUSINESS and HOME from men who believe that, through one of these many fake ‘me’s, they have a relationship with my sister through private messages and off-app sites and have been giving (sometimes) THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to an incredibly famous and successful grown woman,” Bullock-Prado explained in her post. Her message included screenshots of several fraudulent accounts impersonating her.
Meta Faces Criticism Over Handling of Scams
Bullock-Prado did not hold back in criticizing Facebook’s parent company, Meta, for its inadequate response.
Despite repeatedly reporting the accounts, she said Meta has failed to take meaningful action. Frustrated by the lack of progress, she revealed that she has had to involve law enforcement.
“Strangely, [Instagram] handles these things and even informs me when someone creates an account that may be an imposter. But FB? Same company with same tech? Can’t be bothered,” she wrote.
Both Facebook and Instagram are owned by Meta, making the discrepancy even more puzzling.
Bullock-Prado praised local law enforcement for their efforts, calling them “outstanding” in dealing with the situation.
Sandra Bullock Issues Statement of Concern
On Monday, Bullock addressed the issue through a statement given to People, expressing her worries for both her family’s safety and the victims being scammed.
“My family’s safety, as well as the innocent people being taken advantage of, is my deep concern, and there will be a time when I will comment more, but for now our focus is helping law enforcement handle this matter,” Bullock said.
She urged fans to be cautious, reiterating that she does not engage with any social media platforms.
“Please be aware that I do not participate in any form of social media. Any accounts pretending to be me or anyone associated with me are fake accounts and have been created for financial gain or to exploit people around me,” she warned.
Bullock and her sister are committed to stopping the scammers, but they are asking fans to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity involving fake profiles.
