CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI – In a dramatic rescue on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Border Patrol agents used snowmobiles to reach a crash victim whose vehicle was sinking into icy water. Heavy snow and poor road conditions delayed traditional first responders, making the agents’ swift actions crucial in preventing a tragedy.

Crash Near Paradise Leaves Motorist Trapped

The incident occurred Tuesday near Paradise, Michigan, when a vehicle rolled over into a large water-filled ditch. Chippewa County Central Dispatch reported injuries and requested emergency assistance. Harsh winter weather slowed fire and EMS teams trying to access the crash site.

Fortunately, Border Patrol agents patrolling the area on snowmobiles were nearby and arrived first. They found a driver trapped inside the vehicle, which was partially submerged in the water. The driver was pinned by the steering wheel, making escape impossible.

Agents Take Immediate Action

The agents acted quickly. Entering the vehicle through a window, they deflated the airbag and worked to keep the motorist’s head above water to prevent drowning. Nearby bystanders joined in, securing the vehicle to a tree and using lumber to slow its sinking.

The Whitefish Township Fire Department later reached the scene, collaborating with the agents to extract the trapped motorist. EMS teams transported the victim to a hospital for medical care.
