GREENVILLE, SC – A routine traffic stop on I-85 in South Carolina turned into a full-blown emergency response when a truck driver claimed there was a bomb inside his vehicle. The alarming situation led to a shutdown of all lanes on the interstate for several hours while law enforcement investigated the threat. The incident, which caused significant traffic disruption, ended up being a hoax.
The Incident on I-85
It was around 2:45 p.m. on Thursday when a South Carolina State Transport Police officer stopped a tractor-trailer near mile marker 44 on I-85 for a missing license plate. During the stop, the driver made a chilling statement: he claimed there was an explosive device inside the commercial vehicle. This claim triggered an immediate response from local authorities.
As a result, all six lanes of I-85 were closed off as the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the FBI began investigating the bomb threat. The highway remained shut down for several hours as authorities worked to ensure there was no danger.
Investigation and Outcome
Despite the urgency of the situation, the investigation revealed that no explosive device was present in the truck.
The interstate was eventually reopened around 7:40 p.m., allowing traffic to resume. While the threat was found to be false, the disruption caused by the hoax led to a tense and highly coordinated response from law enforcement agencies.
Charges Filed Against the Driver
The driver, 28-year-old Ahmad Jamal Khamees Alhendi of Oak Lawn, Illinois, was taken into custody and charged with several serious offenses. He is a suspected illegal immigrant.
According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS), Alhendi faces charges of breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, conveying false information about a bomb threat, and operating or permitting an unregistered vehicle.
The tractor-trailer involved in the incident was registered to Globe Transportation, a company based in Illinois.
