MEMPHIS, TN – A Memphis, Tennessee womanâs attempt to shoot her boyfriend ended in failure when her gun malfunctioned during a heated argument. Police say the gun jam likely prevented what could have turned into a fatal incident.
Argument Over Utility Bill Escalates
According to Memphis police, the incident occurred on January 8. The man involved told officers that he visited Renell Hardinâs residence after she expressed a desire to reconcile and have him move back in. What began as a discussion about their relationship reportedly escalated into a dispute over a light bill.
As tensions rose, Hardin allegedly retrieved a pistol. The pair moved outside during the argument, where Hardin reportedly fired one shot toward a nearby residence. Another shot was aimed in the direction of a neighbor, striking the victimâs vehicle on the driverâs side.
Gun Malfunction Prevents Tragedy
The situation took a more dangerous turn when Hardin reportedly pointed the gun at the victimâs face and attempted to fire. However, the gun jammed, preventing a potentially fatal outcome. As she tried to fix the weapon, the man seized the opportunity to disarm her.
After gaining control of the gun, the victim fled the scene in his vehicle, but Hardin pursued him. He eventually crashed his car, left it behind, and ran on foot before calling a friend for assistance.
Charges Filed and Investigation Ongoing
Although the victim was not physically harmed, he reported being in fear for his life during the incident.
Following an investigation, police charged Hardin with attempted first-degree murder, employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, and reckless endangerment involving a deadly weapon.
