CALUMET COUNTY, WI – Thanksgiving took a heartbreaking turn for a family in Chilton, Wisconsin, when a fire ripped through their home, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs. As flames quickly spread, a man was trapped inside, forcing him to seek refuge on the roof before firefighters could rescue him. The damage was overwhelming, leaving the family facing a holiday season without a home or possessions.
A Night of Devastation in Chilton
It was just before 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving when the Chilton Fire Department responded to a call about a house fire at 1221 Fox Street. Firefighters arrived to find the side of the home engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the building.
As they assessed the situation, they spotted a man on the second-floor window, desperate for help. The heat and smoke forced him to climb onto the roof, where firefighters used a ladder to bring him to safety.
Swift Response and Rescue Efforts
The fire department quickly called for additional assistance, triggering the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. Firefighters from eight neighboring departments, along with multiple ambulance services and law enforcement, rushed to the scene to help contain the fire and provide support.
Within 30 minutes, firefighters had the flames under control, preventing the fire from reaching the second floor. However, despite their swift action, the damage to the home was catastrophic.
Family Devastated, But Supported
In the wake of the fire, the family was left with nothing but their clothes. Fire Chief Ben Schoenborn explained, “The home is gutted with the family having nothing but the clothes on their backs.” The Red Cross has stepped in to assist the family during this difficult time. Tragically, one of the family’s cats perished in the blaze, and other pets suffered from smoke inhalation. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials believe it was accidental.
This Thanksgiving will forever be marked by the family’s loss, but thanks to the heroic efforts of the Chilton Fire Department and surrounding agencies, they are receiving the support they need as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
