SAN BERNARDINO, CA – A woman in San Bernardino, California, was rescued after spending an entire night trapped in a manhole, injured and alone. The harrowing ordeal began when she fell into the hole on Tuesday night, only to be found the following morning in critical condition.
Fall into the Manhole: A Life-Threatening Accident
On Wednesday, around 11 a.m., a passerby heard screams for help coming from a manhole near the Carousel Mall in San Bernardino. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene after the 911 call was made. The woman, who had fallen approximately 15 to 20 feet into the hole, had been stuck overnight, suffering injuries from the fall.
She explained to rescuers that the incident occurred the previous night, but it wasn’t until morning that help was able to reach her. The woman, in severe pain, was trapped below ground, her cries for assistance the only sign of life until a passerby heard her distress.
Rescue Operation: Swift and Coordinated Response
Upon arrival, the San Bernardino County Fire Department acted quickly. Firefighters set up a 100-foot aerial ladder to begin the complicated rescue process. The department’s Urban Search and Rescue team was also called in for assistance. A high point rope rescue system was put into place, ensuring rescuers could safely descend into the manhole to retrieve the woman.
A video released by the fire department shows a rescuer being lowered into the hole via the rope system. The rescuer quickly assessed the woman’s injuries, which included multiple musculoskeletal injuries, before helping her into a harness. The woman was then carefully hoisted back to the surface by the rescue team.
The Woman’s Condition and Transport to Trauma Center
After the intense rescue operation, the woman was transferred to a local trauma center in moderate condition. Despite the complexity and challenges of the operation, the entire rescue was completed in less than 90 minutes. “Despite all the challenges faced, firefighters were able to safely rescue the patient in less than 90 minutes,” the fire department said in a statement.
San Bernardino Municipal Water Department personnel also responded to the scene, securing the manhole cover to prevent further accidents and ensure the area was safe for emergency workers.
