HOUSTON, TX – A Texas man is accused of brutally killing his own mother, leaving her lifeless in the garage while holding a hammer in his hand. His stepbrother, who stumbled upon the horrifying scene, immediately called their father, frantically urging him to come home. Authorities say the suspect showed no emotion as he paced in and out of the house, gripping the weapon.
Family Nightmare Unfolds in Houston Neighborhood
The shocking crime took place Wednesday night at a home in Woodforest, a Houston-area neighborhood.
Police say 35-year-old Jarell Joseph is charged with first-degree murder after allegedly attacking his mother, 69-year-old Eva Peavy. Investigators believe a hammer may have been the weapon used in the deadly assault.
Joseph’s stepbrother made the gruesome discovery, arriving home to find their mother’s body in the garage while Joseph wandered the property, still clutching the hammer.
According to police, the stepbrother immediately called their father, Curtis Peavy, in sheer panic.
Authorities arrived to find Joseph behaving indifferently, showing no signs of distress. He put down the hammer when ordered and was taken into custody without resistance, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
A History of Domestic Violence and Mental Health Struggles
Family members say this tragedy didn’t come out of nowhere.
Joseph and his mother reportedly had a rocky relationship, and he had previously been arrested for attacking her.
Court records reveal a past domestic violence charge in which he allegedly tried to choke her before another family member intervened.
His stepfather says Joseph had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, conditions that worsened due to drug use. He allegedly turned to synthetic marijuana, which further fueled his instability.
Despite attempts to get him into treatment and on medication, family members say Joseph eventually stopped taking his prescriptions.
His mother, described as loving and devoted, had tried to help him—but it wasn’t enough to prevent this horrific outcome.
Now, as the investigation continues, Joseph remains behind bars, accused of committing an unthinkable act against the woman who gave him life.
