NORTH FORT MYERS, FL – A terrifying early-morning blaze in North Fort Myers, Florida nearly turned fatal, but two quick-thinking deputies broke into action, heroically pulling an injured disabled man through a window as flames consumed his home.

The dramatic rescue unfolded Sunday morning when Field Training Officer Rachel Bauer-Fithian and Deputy Trainee Tyler Voege from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene of a large house fire.

Body-worn camera footage released on Monday captured every heart-pounding moment as the deputies battled thick smoke and dangerous flames to save the man trapped inside.

Desperate Struggle Inside the Burning House

When the deputies first arrived, they found the man trapped in a bedroom, unable to escape the growing inferno. Bauer-Fithian initially tried to crawl inside the home, but the thick, suffocating smoke forced her back outside. Coughing and gasping for air, she regrouped and quickly devised a new plan.

She directed Voege to help break the bedroom window. Video footage shows them smashing the glass and covering the sharp edges with a blanket before reaching in to pull the man out. The man’s screams of pain filled the air as they struggled to free him from the burning structure.

Flames Engulf the Home as Rescue Is Completed

As the deputies pulled him to safety, the house was consumed by dense black smoke and growing flames. The footage captures the terrifying moment as the fire continued to rage behind them.

The injured man was rushed to a local hospital, where he is being treated for injuries sustained during the ordeal. Authorities have not provided further details on his condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
