CHEBOYGAN, MI — Housekeeping staff at the Pine River Motel in Cheboygan, Michigan were startled to find a three-foot-long alligator named Wally in a recently vacated room. The reptile belonged to a guest who had been in town to present exotic animal assemblies at local elementary schools.

An Unusual Discovery

While tidying up after the guest’s departure, a staff member looked under the bed and found Wally. The motel manager described Wally as friendly, noting that the alligator allowed police officers to handle him without incident.

Owner’s Surprise and Reunion

The owner, unaware of Wally’s whereabouts, believed the alligator had escaped into the wild. He was relieved to learn that Wally had been found safe at the motel. The two were reunited later that evening.

Legal Considerations

In Michigan, owning an alligator is legal, as state laws prohibit only the ownership of animals indigenous to the state. This incident adds to Michigan’s history of unusual alligator encounters, including a 2024 sighting in Kent Lake that led to warning signs being posted around the area.
