WASHINGTON, D.C. — A former U.S. Postal Service employee faces up to 45 years behind bars after a federal jury found him guilty of orchestrating an audacious $1.6 million check theft scheme. Hachikosela Muchimba, 44, transformed stolen Treasury and private checks into his personal piggy bank between December 2020 and March 2023. The Washington, D.C. resident funneled the altered checks into his own accounts, funding an extravagant lifestyle of international travel, luxury hotel stays, and frequent visits to gentlemen’s clubs.
The Paper Trail Leads to Justice
Bank surveillance footage captured Muchimba making deposits and withdrawals of the ill-gotten gains. The evidence helped secure convictions for conspiracy to commit theft of mail, bank fraud, engaging in illegal monetary transactions, and unlawful procurement of citizenship.
Immigration Troubles Mount
Beyond the financial crimes, Muchimba’s legal troubles extend to his immigration status. During his naturalization process, he falsely claimed a clean criminal record. This deception earned him an additional conviction for unlawful procurement of naturalization, potentially triggering denaturalization proceedings.
Failed Escape Plan
When authorities closed in during September 2023, Muchimba attempted to flee to Zambia. Law enforcement thwarted his escape plans, leading to his arrest.
What Comes Next
The former postal worker awaits an August 8 sentencing date. He faces up to 30 years for bank fraud, 5 years for mail theft, and 10 years for the immigration-related conviction.
