PORT RICHARD, WA – A tense confrontation unfolded in a quiet Washington neighborhood, leaving one man dead and another facing years behind bars. On January 10, 2023, Chad Wilson, a 41-year-old resident of Port Richard near Seattle, spotted a car parked near his mailbox. Convinced the occupants were pilfering his letters, he grabbed his gun and took matters into his own hands. What followed was a fatal encounter that ended with 31-year-old Richard Taii lifeless in the driver’s seat.

Fatal Standoff in a Cul-de-Sac

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office pieced together the chaotic scene using surveillance footage and accounts from two women in the car with Taii.

Wilson allegedly blocked their vehicle in a cul-de-sac, demanding his mail be returned. Stepping out of his truck, he assumed a combat-ready position and fired a single, lethal shot into Taii’s head. The car then drifted, crashing into nearby mailboxes.

Self-Defense or Deadly Overreaction?

Wilson insisted he acted to protect himself, claiming Taii drove toward him aggressively. However, video evidence contradicted his story, showing Taii attempting to maneuver around Wilson’s truck, not at it.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found at least one piece of mail, leading to mail theft charges for the two women accompanying Taii. Recently released from jail on bond, Taii had no prior connection to Wilson, making the encounter a tragic clash between strangers.

A Neighborhood Plagued by Mail Theft

Investigators detained Wilson just hours after the shooting.

During questioning, he admitted he bypassed calling law enforcement, believing they wouldn’t recover his stolen property effectively.

Residents of Port Richard later told local media that missing mail had long frustrated the community, setting the stage for Wilson’s drastic actions. The two women linked to Taii have since faced prosecution for their role in the theft.

Justice Awaits in Court

Chad Wilson went before a jury, which found him guilty of three charges: first-degree manslaughter, murder with extreme indifference, and drive-by shooting, after he shot and killed someone.

Wilson’s fate now rests with a judge, who will deliver a sentence on March 28.
