EVERETT, WA — A routine afternoon in Everett, Washington transformed into an intense rescue mission when an elderly motorist smashed through the wall of Althea’s Footwear, triggering a complex emergency response that lasted nearly an hour.
Race Against Time
Emergency crews scrambled to the 1900 block of Broadway around 3 p.m., where they found an elderly man trapped inside his vehicle. The driver, in his mid-80s, had veered across oncoming traffic and collided with a light pole before crashing straight through the store’s south wall.
High-Stakes Rescue Operation
Firefighters faced a delicate situation, having to stabilize the compromised building structure while simultaneously working to free the trapped driver. Using specialized equipment including the Jaws of Life, emergency responders methodically cut away sections of the mangled vehicle to reach the trapped motorist.
Safe Ending to Tense Situation
After a nail-biting 50-minute rescue operation, emergency crews successfully freed the driver from the wreckage. The elderly man sustained injuries but remained stable throughout his transport to Providence Regional Medical Center.
Building Safety Under Review
While Althea’s Footwear was fortunately closed during the incident, preventing any additional casualties, structural engineers from Everett Public Works have been called in to evaluate the building’s integrity. Local law enforcement continues to investigate the factors that led to this unusual collision.
