NICHOLAS COUNTY, WV – A dramatic rescue unfolded in Summersville, West Virginia on December 10, 2024, when a local man became trapped in the mud at Summersville Lake due to its low water levels. The incident, which occurred near the south side of Hughes Bridge, required a coordinated response from multiple local fire departments.
Rescue Efforts Begin in Difficult Conditions
The Summersville Fire Department responded to the call on Tuesday evening. Fire officials reported that the individual had accessed the lake but became “severely stuck” in the mud, which had been exposed by the lake’s unusually low water level.
Initial attempts by rescuers to reach the man from the water were unsuccessful due to the treacherous conditions, leaving them with few options to safely extract him.
A Coordinated Rescue Operation
Recognizing the complexity of the situation, additional support was requested from the Wilderness Fire Department and the Fayette County vertical rescue team.
In order to carry out the rescue, responders set up a hoist system from the overhead bridge, and Route 19 northbound was shut down temporarily to provide ample space for the operation. The team was lowered down to the trapped man before hoisting him safely to the bridge using a rescue litter and ropes.
Gratitude for Teamwork and Assistance
The Summersville Fire Department expressed their appreciation for the teamwork and quick response from all involved.
In a Facebook post, they wrote, “We would like to thank everyone who came to assist in this call. We are very blessed to have such good partners in our region who will come at a moment’s notice.”
