CHICAGO, IL – It’s not every day you see a coyote in downtown Chicago, Illinois—especially one that looks like it’s grocery shopping—but that’s exactly what happened at a local Aldi store in the Windy City. On Monday morning, a wild coyote caused chaos by slipping into the refrigerated section, sparking a dramatic rescue captured on video.
Shocking Scene in the Supermarket
In the now-viral footage, two police officers can be seen using broomsticks to coax the elusive animal out of a shelf in the refrigerated aisle. After several attempts, one officer grabs the coyote by the tail. The animal momentarily escapes back into the shelving, leaving onlookers stunned.
The unusual intruder was eventually captured, and Chicago Animal Care and Control arrived to take custody of the wild creature.
Next Steps for the Wild Visitor
According to Chicago Animal Care and Control, the coyote appeared unharmed. Officials confirmed it would be sent to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation for a full health assessment.
“The coyote appears uninjured, but Flint Creek will conduct an assessment to confirm its health before releasing it back into the wild,” the agency said.
Witnesses reported spotting the animal wandering around the parking lot before it slipped into the store.
A Warning About Coyote Season
This unusual sighting coincides with coyote mating season, which occurs from January through March. Chicago Animal Care and Control issued a public advisory, explaining that increased coyote activity is common during this period.
“During this time, coyotes are more active and may be seen more frequently, even during daylight hours,” the agency shared in a Facebook post.
While typically shy and avoiding human interaction, coyotes are drawn to urban areas in search of food or shelter. The agency urged residents to secure trash, avoid feeding wildlife, and keep pets leashed and supervised to reduce the likelihood of encounters.
The Humboldt Park incident is a striking example of how wildlife can unexpectedly cross paths with urban life, reminding residents to remain vigilant during this active season.
