WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL – In a tense and dangerous situation early Monday morning, a sheriff’s deputy in Williamson County, Illinois, successfully stopped a runaway car, preventing it from plunging into Crab Orchard Lake. The vehicle, driven by a pregnant woman, had been out of control for several minutes before deputies managed to intervene.

The 911 Call and Initial Response

Around 2:02 a.m., the driver of the runaway car called 911, reporting that her vehicle was unable to stop. Deputies quickly responded to the call and pursued the car, which was traveling westbound on Old Route 13 near Division Street in Carterville. Despite the brake lights being visibly activated, the vehicle continued traveling at about 30 mph and did not slow down.

As the car neared Crab Orchard Lake, deputies realized the situation was too dangerous to allow the vehicle to continue without intervention. Concerned that the car might drive directly into the lake, the officers made the decision to initiate a “rolling road block,” a tactic to safely bring the car to a stop.

The Critical Maneuver

One of the deputies pulled ahead of the runaway car and began decelerating slowly. The deputy then gently made contact with the rear bumper of the patrol vehicle, forcing both vehicles to come to a stop. The maneuver was successful, and the car came to a halt just a quarter-mile from the lake.

Had the Deputy not been on scene or delayed performing this maneuver the driver and vehicle would have likely gone into the water upon reaching the lake,” said Sheriff Jeff Diederich in a statement.

No Injuries, But Extra Caution Taken

After stopping the car, deputies learned the driver was pregnant. As a precautionary measure, an ambulance was called to the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and both the driver and deputy were unharmed.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that there was no damage to the patrol vehicle, and only minor damage occurred to the woman’s car. The deputies’ quick and careful actions ensured a peaceful resolution to what could have been a tragic situation.
