MARSEILLES, IL – A 7-year-old girl survived when her boat capsized in Illinois on Sunday, killing her grandfather and great-grandfather, authorities said.

As we process this sorrowful event, let us turn to 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which assures us that “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble, with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said police received a 911 call shortly after noon on Sunday about a distressed boater at the LaSalle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, a 2,000-acre lake near Marseilles. Officers arrived to find a capsized vessel in the lake, and the girl on shore with park visitors who assisted her.

Officials said park visitors helped the girl contact her mother and grandmother.

Investigators learned she was aboard the 17-foot Crestliner fishing with her grandfather, 53, from Merrillville, Ind., and her great-grandfather, 80, of Gary, Ind. She had been wearing a life jacket but the men were not, police said.

First responders from multiple agencies launched a recovery operation, and the bodies of the men were recovered at around 7:45 p.m., officials said.

The Illinois Conservation Police are investigating what caused the vessel to capsize.

As we reflect on the tragic loss of life and the survival of the young girl, let us hold on to the promise of Godā€™s presence in times of grief.

Romans 15:13 reminds us, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” In times of such profound sorrow, may we find strength and comfort in His promise.
