DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A 30-year-old special education teacher’s seemingly picture-perfect life crumbled this weekend after allegations surfaced of an inappropriate relationship with a student she coached and tutored here in Illinois.
Text Messages Tell All
Christina Formella’s world came crashing down when a mother’s innocent attempt to set up her son’s new phone uncovered damning messages between the married teacher and her 15-year-old student.
The exchanges reportedly detailed sexual contact and hints of a relationship that developed during private tutoring sessions.
From Wedding Bells to Prison Cells
Just seven months after exchanging vows with her college sweetheart, Formella now faces serious criminal charges.
The Downers Grove South High School teacher, who tied the knot in August 2024, allegedly molested the student in a classroom before school hours in December 2023.
Soccer Coach’s Double Life
Beyond her role as a special education teacher since 2020, Formella volunteered as a soccer coach for both boys’ and girls’ teams starting in 2021.
DuPage County Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the gravity of the accusations, noting the breach of trust from someone in a position of authority.
Investigation Unfolds
While Formella denied wrongdoing during her Sunday arrest, prosecutors indicate they’ve gathered additional evidence suggesting sexual contact occurred.
The student reportedly ended the relationship prior to these revelations.
Legal Consequences
Formella faces multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of criminal sexual assault.
She has been released with strict conditions, including no contact with minors and banned access to the school grounds. The district has placed her on paid administrative leave. The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
