Porch Swings, Patriotism and Ranch Dressing
WINONA, MN – Friends, it’s that time of year again when we dust off our stars and stripes, fire up the grill, and celebrate the birth of our great nation. Here in the heartland, Independence Day isn’t just a holiday – it’s a way of life. We are the heart of America, after all. I’m firing up the ol’ grill at home here in Winona, Minnesota as I type this to you.
Simple Joys and Unity
As we gather ’round picnic tables laden with potato salad and apple pie, let’s take a moment to appreciate the simple joys that unite us all.
After all, as the Good Book says, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1). And what better way to live in unity than sharing a well-charred hot dog with your neighbor?

What Truly Matters
This Fourth of July, let’s put aside our differences and focus on what truly matters: family, community, and the pursuit of the perfect fireworks display.
As John F. Kennedy once eloquently put it, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” And today, what we can do for our country is come together, break bread, and maybe help Uncle Sven figure out why his lawn chair keeps collapsing. Maybe too many hot dogs? Hehe.

The Rules We All Play By
Speaking of coming together, comedian Jerry Seinfeld nailed it when he said, “To me, a lawyer is basically the person that knows the rules of the country. We’re all throwing the dice, playing the game, moving our pieces around the board, but if there’s a problem, the lawyer is the only person who has read the inside of the top of the box.”
Well, on Independence Day, we’re all reading from the same rulebook: have fun, be kind, and don’t set anything important on fire.
United We Stand
So, whether you’re from a big city or out in the country, a Democrat or a Republican, someone who puts ketchup on their hot dog or a mustard purist, today we’re all just Americans. But as for me and my household, we will use Ranch dressing.
The point is: we’re all united by our love for this country, our appreciation for freedom, and our collective struggle to keep the mosquitoes at bay during the fireworks.
A Grand Experiment
As we watch the rockets’ red glare light up the night sky, let’s remember that we’re all part of this grand experiment called America.
We may not agree on everything, but we can all agree that there’s no place we’d rather be on the Fourth of July than right here in the heartland, where the corn is as high as an elephant’s eye and the spirit of independence is as strong as a cup of KwikTrip coffee.
