Gary, Indiana – High school can be a challenging time, but imagine balancing it with college courses! That’s precisely what two remarkable teens from Gary, Indiana are doing, as they gear up to receive their bachelor’s degrees this spring.
Meet Abram Lewis and Khaya Njumbe, two high school students who are achieving something extraordinary. On a recent visit to Indianapolis, they received high honors and even caught the attention of Governor Eric Holcomb.
Abram and Khaya aren’t your typical teens. They attend Geo Academy’s 21st Century Charter School, where they tackle both high school and college classes. But don’t call them prodigies just yet!
The teenagers talked about their experience of managing college alongside high school. On campus, they often surprised people due to their younger age, with some even mistaking them for the professor’s children.
At the ages of 15 and 17, they are already focused on their future goals. Abram Lewis mentioned that it feels surreal to be ahead in their college journey. When questioned about the workload, they acknowledged that it can be quite challenging.

Despite their packed schedules, they still make time for extracurricular activities. Khaya enjoys basketball and gymnastics, while Abram cherishes the typical joys of childhood.
Their secret to success appears to revolve around effective time management, according to Khaya Njumbe.

Their dedication and efforts have garnered recognition, with a recent accolade from a group of Black leaders in Indianapolis. Khaya’s mother, Belinda Njumbe, expressed her lack of surprise, citing the opportunities available in America as a contributing factor.
This remarkable journey is the result of years of dedication and determination. With four associate degrees between them, medical school is the next step for both. Khaya aspires to pursue a master’s in public health and eventually become an orthopedic surgeon.
Abram is following in his older sister’s footsteps, who also earned her associate’s degree while in high school. The future looks bright for these two ambitious teens as they continue to make waves in their educational journey.
