EVANSVILLE, IN – An Indiana man fought off a man who shot at him and attempted to stab him Tuesday evening, and the allegedly attacker is now facing charges, authorities said.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office said the victim called 911 at around 5:11 p.m. Tuesday to report he had ben shot at by the suspect in the driveway of a river camp on Lynn Road near the Angel Mounds Boat Ramp.

The suspect fled the scene, and the victim advised dispatchers that he was following the suspect in his vehicle.

The victim guided deputies and officers with the Evansville Police Department to the suspect’s location. An Evansville officer was able to conduct a traffic stop, and took the suspect, identified as 64-year-old Derek Anthony Smith, into custody. A handgun was allegedly found in his vehicle.

The victim told investigators that he was inside his vehicle in the driveway of his friend’s river camp when Smith drove past multiple times before stopping to block him into the driveway.

When he called out to Smith, he allegedly fired one shot directly at the victim, causing a grazing wound along his forearm.

The victim said he exited his vehicle and “charged” at Smith, pushing the gun down and striking Smith in the head several times. He said he wrestled the gun away from Smith, but he allegedly produced a knife and “repeatedly” tried to stab the victim.

After striking Smith several more times, the victim backed away, “fearing for his life.” At that point, Smith allegedly drove straight at the victim, knocking him down before fleeing the scene.
