SOUTH BEND, IN – A shocking incident in South Bend, Indiana, has landed a mother behind bars after she accidentally ran over her young daughter during a dangerous game. Jasmine White, a 27-year-old from the area, turned a playful moment into a life-altering tragedy when her 8-year-old was seriously hurt in an apartment complex last summer.
A Game Gone Wrong
The incident unfolded on August 29, 2024, when White engaged her children in a risky activity.
According to one of her kids, the game involved racing them to the car, locking the doors, and pretending to drive off, leaving them behind.
On this occasion, her 8-year-old daughter grabbed the passenger door handle as White accelerated. Tragically, the girl’s foot slipped under the rear tire, dragging her to the ground.
Severe Injuries Reported
The young girl suffered devastating injuries, including a fractured skull and broken bones around her eye. She also endured deep facial cuts exposing bone, widespread bruising, and the loss of five teeth.
After days in the hospital, which included intensive treatments like intubation and IV sedation, she was able to return home.
Details from the Scene
One of White’s other children explained to authorities that their mother was driving faster than usual that day.
Video evidence reportedly captured White picking up speed—reaching between 15 and 20 mph—while her daughter clung to the door.
The combination of velocity and the child’s grip on the handle led to the catastrophic outcome in the South Bend apartment complex.
Prison Time for Reckless Actions
White has been sentenced to nine years in prison, with five years suspended, resulting in four years of actual jail time under a work-release program.
The sentencing came after she admitted guilt to child neglect charges in January, with the final ruling delivered on a recent Friday.
Following her prison term at St. Joseph Correctional Center, she’ll face two years of probation. The St. Joseph Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the details of her punishment.
