LA PORTE, IN – The somber stillness of local cemeteries was shattered when authorities discovered that veteran grave markers had been stolen in a brazen series of thefts across Indiana.

Families, already grieving their loved ones, faced additional heartbreak when they found the bronze markers—honoring their deceased veterans—had disappeared. In total, 15 grave markers were stolen, and one was reported damaged, leaving the community outraged and demanding justice.

The theft of veteran grave markers is not just a crime; it’s an insult to the brave men and women who served our country with honor. These markers represent their sacrifice, and for anyone to steal them for personal gain is beyond shameful. The lowlifes responsible for this despicable act have disrespected the memory of our veterans and should face the full consequences of the law. Thankfully, now it looks like they will.

The investigation began in August when the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office started receiving reports of missing veteran markers from local cemeteries. Detective Jake Koch, a veteran himself, was quickly assigned to lead the investigation.

As reports mounted, the public was encouraged to visit veteran gravesites to check for any missing or damaged markers.

Breakthrough in Investigation Leads to Arrests

On August 29, a credible tip gave detectives a crucial lead. It wasn’t long before Detectives Koch and Aaron Banic connected the dots.

The stolen markers were not confined to one or two cemeteries but were taken from several, including Union Mills and Rolling Prairie Cemeteries.

The impact of these thefts reverberated across the community, with families mourning both the loss of their loved ones and the desecration of their memorials.

On September 6, in a coordinated operation called “Justice, Peace and Salute,” authorities made their move. Terry L. Wood, 53, was arrested at a home on Andrew Avenue in La Porte. Later that same day, Breanna C. Puentez, 25, was also taken into custody for her alleged involvement in the thefts.

Authorities Speak Out

Captain Derek J. Allen of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office condemned the thefts, expressing the community’s outrage: “This type of criminal behavior is disgusting, unacceptable, and will not be tolerated in La Porte County,” he said.

“It is the hope of the entire Sheriff’s Office that because of the diligent and thorough investigation by Detectives Koch and Banic, justice will be served to both accused subjects. Hopefully, US Veterans, both deceased and living, can find peace and comfort with these arrests, and with that, we salute them for their service.”

The arrests have provided some relief to a community deeply shaken by the thefts, but the pain caused by the desecration of veteran graves will not be easily forgotten.

Our veterans have selflessly served to protect our freedoms and way of life. Their sacrifice, both in life and in death, deserves the utmost respect and honor. As we reflect on their courage, we must continue to uphold their legacy and ensure their memory is preserved for future generations.
