BENTONSPORT, IA — The ancient floorboards creak with every step at the Mason House Inn, but that’s not what keeps visitors awake at night here in Bentonsport, Iowa. It’s the whispers in empty hallways, the unexplained footsteps, and the lingering presence of more than 300 restless spirits that have made this bed & breakfast Iowa’s most spine-chilling overnight stay.

A Doctor’s Final House Call

Built in 1846 as a steamboat travelers’ refuge, the Mason House Inn harbors darker secrets beneath its quaint exterior.

During the Civil War, its rooms transformed into makeshift hospital wards, where one unfortunate doctor met his end — succumbing to illness in his own office, forever bound to the building where he once healed others.

Murder, Mystery, and Multiple Owners

The inn’s macabre history doesn’t end there.

Three former owners drew their final breaths within these walls, and one ill-fated guest met a violent end — though the circumstances remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

While authorities investigated these incidents at the time, no formal charges were ever filed.

Not Your Average Ghost Hunt

Unlike typical haunted locations that trade in fear and malevolence, current owners insist the Mason House Inn’s spirits are more like permanent houseguests than hostile entities.

“There’s nothing negative here,” they maintain, though they enforce strict rules against Ouija boards — at the spirits’ own request.

Modern Comfort Meets Victorian Haunts

Today’s visitors can choose their level of supernatural exposure.

The main house offers six Victorian-era rooms, while the converted Wash House and General Store provide more distant accommodations.

For those seeking maximum distance from the paranormal activity, there’s even a charming restored caboose available for overnight stays.

Ghost Hunter’s Paradise

Professional paranormal investigators frequently conduct sessions here, with three investigation packages available:

  • Single room rentals for casual ghost hunters
  • Main house rental with exclusive access to six rooms
  • Full property rental for serious supernatural sleuths

The Price of Paranormal Pursuit

Want to commune with the other side? Room rentals require full payment upon booking, while house and full-inn rentals demand a $250 non-refundable deposit.

Spirits and spirits don’t mix here — alcohol is strictly prohibited during investigations, and only commercially produced ghost-hunting equipment is allowed.
