Born James Otis Powell to a resilient single mother, Powell’s early life was steeped in the rich oral traditions of gospel and storytelling. His childhood was a rich mosaic woven with the wisdom of his ancestors, from his great-grandmother, a formerly enslaved woman who knew the Bible by heart, to his mother, a trailblazing minister in the United Methodist Church.

Powell’s artistic journey began in the halls of Alabama A&M, a historically black college where he majored in telecommunications and dabbled in philosophy. But it was in the Twin Cities that his creative spirit truly took flight. Here, he immersed himself in the worlds of creative writing and performance poetry, studying under luminaries like Gloria Anzaldúa and Amiri Baraka.
