St. Paul, Minnesota – In the early 1800s, James Thompson was born into slavery in Virginia. Despite this challenging start, he rose above his circumstances to become a respected figure in St. Paul, Minnesota. His life was a testament to resilience and the power of human spirit.
Thompson’s journey to Minnesota began in 1827 when he was brought by his owner to Fort Snelling. Here, he was sold to another officer and married a Dakota leader’s daughter. This connection led him to learn the Dakota language, which would later play a crucial role in his life.
In 1837, Methodist missionary Alfred Brunson recognized Thompson’s unique skills and helped him gain his freedom. Thompson then became the mission’s interpreter, bridging the gap between the Methodist faith and the Dakota people. His efforts contributed to the establishment of the area’s first Methodist mission.
However, by 1839, the mission’s influence waned, and Thompson shifted his focus to carpentry and operating a ferry boat. He played a vital role in the early development of St. Paul, even helping construct the city’s first home.
Thompson’s legacy in St. Paul went beyond his contributions to its physical growth. Despite being the first resident of African descent, he was embraced by the community for his active involvement in its development.
His story is a celebration of Black History Month, showcasing how one man’s journey from slavery to prominence reflected the changing attitudes towards race and equality in early Minnesota.
