NEW YORK, NY – Jason Kelce says he tried to curb his young daughters’ desire for a cat by telling them the animals are “poisonous.”
The retired Philadelphia Eagles center, 36, shared the story on this week’s episode of the “New Heights” podcast he hosts with his brother, Kansas City chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“You know what my latest plan to divert our family from getting a cat is? I just keep telling our girls that cats are poisonous,” Jason said. He shares daughters Wyatt, 4, Elliotte, 3, and Bennett, 18 months, with wife Kylie Kelce.
“Why the f* would you tell them that?” Travis asked.
“So that they don’t want cats,” Jason replied. “And I don’t have to deal with having a cat and make them terrified.”
“That’s sick,” Travis said.
“It’s whatever. They’ll find out — I think lying to your kids is important,” Jason joked.
“Not in this regard,” Travis laughed. “They’re gonna go over a friend’s house and f*ing scream bloody murder because they see a cat.”
“That’s fine. That sounds like that person’s house problem,” Jason replied.
Travis joked that “psycho” Jason was being “ridiculous,” but Jason countered that he has to take the extreme measures because Kylie doesn’t cover for his lie.
“I gotta get these kids on my side. Otherwise, I’m in a sinking ship,” Jason said.
“Kylie is like, ‘They’re not poisonous. Your dad is lying to you’,” tJason said. “I’m like, listen, If you have a cat, the government will come and take it from you because it’s they’re so lethal that I mean, they can kill you … and they don’t even have to bite you. Just them licking you.”
Jason said his objection to cats is more about already having too many animals in the house than a particular dislike for the species.
“I don’t want another animal in the house. My dogs have already ruined the furniture,” Jason said, conceding that he’d be “OK with an outdoor cat.”
The comments come months after Kylie Kelce enlisted her brother-in-law’s help in convincing Jason to accept a cat back in a December 2023 podcast episode, supposing that Travis might “like cats now” that he was dating noted cat lover Taylor Swift.
“No, here’s the deal, I told Jason that I want to get a cat,” Kylie said. “And he told me no. And I feel like you might like cats now.”
“What color cat do you want?” Travis asked.
