NEW YORK, NY – Jenna Ortega says last year’s rumor that she was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp was the most “insane” rumor she’s ever heard about herself.

Ortega, 21, was featured in Buzzfeed’s puppy interview series on Monday to promote her upcoming film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” when she was asked about the “craziest” headline she’s ever seen about herself.

“Probably that I was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp and I wanted everybody to leave us alone. It’s so insane to me. I never spoke on that, I never said anything like that,” she said.

The rumor popped up online in August 2023 when social media gossip account DeuxMoi published the rumor that Ortega and Depp, 61, were dating.

NME published a report citing a since deleted Instagram story in which Ortega allegedly wrote: “”This is so ridiculous I can’t even laugh. I have never met or worked with Johnny Depp in my life. Please stop spreading lies and leave us alone.”

A rep for Depp shut down the rumor at the time, issuing a statement saying he “has no personal or professional relationship with Ms. Ortega whatsoever,” and adding that he had “never met her or spoken to her.”

Ortega said even Richard E. Grant asked her about the rumor on set. They worked together on the upcoming black comedy “Death of a Unicorn.”

“He came up to me and he just said, ‘Oh, so you and Johnny?’ and I laughed, because I don’t know that person,” she said.

“Articles really do just make up their own quotes, but I thought that was pretty hilarious,” she said.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a sequel to 1988’s “Beetlejuice,” had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 28 and will hit theaters on Sept. 6.
