A Daring Robbery Gone Wrong

On September 7, 1876, the notorious James-Younger gang rode into the small town of Northfield, Minnesota, ready to pull off their boldest heist yet. These outlaws from Missouri, including the famous Jesse James, his brother Frank, the Younger brothers, and a few other bandits, had their sights set on the First National Bank. Little did they know, the brave folks of Northfield were about to give them a run for their money!

The gang split up, with Frank James and a couple others heading into the bank while the rest stood guard outside. Local man J. S. Allen smelled trouble right away and hollered for everyone to grab their guns because the bank was being robbed! Suddenly, all heck broke loose.

Heroic Minnesota Townsfolk Fight Back

The people of Northfield didn’t take too kindly to these strangers stirring up trouble. Henry Wheeler, a quick-thinking medical student, raced to the third floor of the nearby Dampier Hotel, took aim with his gun, and fired at one of the gang members, Clell Miller, who tumbled right off his horse. Hardware store owner Anselm Manning snuck around the corner and took out another outlaw, Bill Chadwell.

Inside the bank, things were going just as badly for the robbers. The bank employees put up a fight, refusing to open the safe and even trying to make a run for it. In the end, the gang had to hightail it out of there, leaving behind two of their own and the loot they’d come for.

The Biggest Manhunt in U.S. History

The surviving gang members ran off, but the folks of southern Minnesota weren’t about to let them get away that easily. For two whole weeks, hundreds of volunteers searched high and low for the outlaws in what became the biggest manhunt the country had ever seen!

Eventually, the Younger brothers were caught and sentenced to life in prison, while Jesse and Frank James managed to slip away and deny they were ever even in Minnesota.
