National Black Farmers Association Demands Resignation of John Deere CEO!

MOLINE, IL – The National Black Farmers Association (NBFA) President John W. Boyd, Jr. has called for the resignation of John Deere CEO John May and initiated a boycott against the company.

Boyd’s demands come in response to John Deere’s continued plans to launch an autonomous tractor by 2030, a move Boyd believes is heading in the wrong direction, particularly regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

Job Cuts and Relocation to Mexico

In a controversial move, John Deere has announced the layoff of 600 workers in Illinois and Iowa as it plans to shift operations to Mexico.

The company’s Waterloo, Iowa tractor cab plant is set to move by 2024, followed by the relocation of skid steer loader and compact track loader production from Dubuque, Iowa by 2026. This decision has sparked criticism about the company’s commitment to American workers.

DEI Initiatives and Discrimination Allegations

Recently, Deere decided to cease support for “social or cultural awareness” events, citing customer feedback.

This decision comes shortly after Deere agreed to pay $1.1 million in back wages and interest to 277 Black and Hispanic job applicants following allegations of systemic hiring discrimination by the Department of Labor.

CEO John C. May stated, “A company is only as healthy as its reputation and only as good as its word. Ultimately, a company is judged by its actions.”

Boyd’s Concerns and Demands

Boyd and the NBFA fear that more companies may reduce their DEI efforts, impacting the advancement of marginalized groups.

Boyd has sought a meeting with CEO John May to discuss these concerns but has not received a response. Boyd emphasizes that John Deere holds significant financial influence over farmers, being one of the largest debt holders in the agricultural sector.

Call for Resignation and Boycott

In a bold statement, Boyd has not only called for the resignation of John Deere CEO John May but also urged for a boycott of the company.

“It is the farmer, not the machine that will take care of the crop and ensure it grows. I challenge John Deere to service all of America’s farmers, including Black farmers,” Boyd declared.
