JOPPATOWNE, MD – The echo of a gunshot reverberated through the halls of Maryland’s Joppatowne High School, sending students into chaos and panic. In the boy’s bathroom on the first floor, 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant lay bleeding on the tile floor.

His classmates, in a frantic attempt to save him, dragged his motionless body into the hallway, where school nurses fought to stabilize him. The sound of helicopters filled the air as he was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Hospital, but it was too late. He did not survive.

A New Student, A Fatal Encounter

Jaylen Rushawn Prince, just 16 years old, is accused of firing the fatal shot. Police report that it was Prince’s first day at Joppatowne High School, and the events that led to the shooting remain unclear.

What is known is that the two boys had some form of prior connection, though the details have yet to be revealed. The altercation between them took place around 12:35 p.m., culminating in a single, devastating gunshot.

After the shooting, Prince fled the school in a desperate attempt to escape. Authorities apprehended him shortly after, hiding in a nearby apartment complex, attempting to break into a home. He was arrested without further incident, though the weapon used in the shooting has yet to be recovered.

The Investigation Continues

Prince has now been charged as an adult with multiple serious offenses, including murder, first and second-degree assault, and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. His history with law enforcement is not new.

Since 2022, Prince has been involved in over ten incidents with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, though it remains unclear whether he has a juvenile criminal record.
