PORTLAND, ME – A search is underway for two juveniles who escaped a detention facility in Maine on Friday and allegedly stole a car, authorities said.
The South Portland Police Department initially responded to a report of an attempted escape at the Long Creek Youth Development Center at around 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“Minutes later,” police responded to a separate report of a strong-armed robbery with threat of a firearm in a parking lot at 10 Liberty Lane. Police said no weapons was sighted, and two juvenile males fled the scene of the robbery in a stolen white Honda Civic.
On Saturday, police said the stolen vehicle was recovered but the two minors were still at large. The police department is working with the Maine Department of Corrections, along with state and federal officials including the U.S. Marshals Service to apprehend the juveniles.
The South Portland Police Department issued temporary warrants for robbery, theft and assault. The identities of the two juveniles were not released to the public due to their age, but were entered into New England and national databases to alert other law enforcement departments.
The Maine DOC is launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the escaped youths or their whereabouts to immediately report sightings to 911. Members of the public are advised not to approach or engage the youths.
