ST. PAUL, MN – Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate, according to reports from CNN. The choice of Walz, known for his Midwestern roots and progressive record, adds a folksy and relatable figure to Harris’ presidential ticket.
Walz’s selection comes after a competitive consideration process, with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly also in the running.

A Governor with Humble Beginnings
Tim Walz, originally from Chadron, Nebraska, has had a diverse career that spans military service, education, and politics. After earning a degree in social studies from Chadron State College, Walz joined the Army National Guard, eventually retiring as a Command Sergeant Major after 24 years of service.
Following his military career, Walz became a high school teacher and football coach in Minnesota, where he led the Mankato West High School football team to a state championship.
His background as a teacher and coach helped him develop a down-to-earth communication style that resonates with many voters, particularly in rural areas.
Rising Political Star
Walz’s political career took off in 2006 when he unseated a Republican incumbent to win Minnesota’s 1st congressional district, a traditionally conservative area. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for five terms before successfully running for governor of Minnesota in 2018.
As governor, Walz has become a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, particularly after leading the state to a political “trifecta” in 2022, with Democrats gaining control of the governor’s office, state senate, and state House of Representatives.
This allowed for the passage of a wide-ranging progressive agenda, including laws that protect abortion rights, provide free school meals, and establish Minnesota as a “trans refuge.”
Challenges and Criticism
While Walz brings significant strengths to the Harris campaign, he also carries political baggage. His tenure as governor was marked by criticism during the unrest following George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, with opponents blaming his administration for not doing enough to prevent the subsequent riots and looting.
Additionally, Walz’s administration faced scrutiny for a $250 million COVID-era fraud scandal, raising concerns about his ability to manage national issues.
Harris Campaign Weighs the Pros and Cons
Despite these challenges, the Harris campaign believes that Walz’s ability to connect with rural voters and his track record of progressive achievements make him a valuable asset in the race against former President Donald Trump and his running mate, J.D.
