“Mockery of Christianity,” Say French Religious Leaders!

KANSAS CITY, MO – Controversy erupted at the 2024 Paris Olympics when Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker took to Instagram to denounce a drag queen recreation of the “Last Supper.”

Butker, known for his strong Catholic beliefs, called the performance “crazy” and cited scripture in his fiery post.

The Dramatic Opening Ceremony

The contentious scene unfolded during Friday’s opening ceremony. Eighteen performers, dressed in drag, posed behind a long table with the glittering Eiffel Tower and River Seine as their backdrop.

The tableau was a clear reference to Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic depiction of Jesus Christ’s final meal with his apostles. The performance has sparked a wave of outrage, particularly among devout Christians.

Butker’s Outrage Goes Viral

Butker, 29, didn’t mince words on his Instagram Stories. Sharing a screenshot of the performance, he quoted the book of Galatians: “Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”

His post quickly went viral, igniting further debate online. Butker, who has previously made headlines for his devout Catholicism, is no stranger to controversy.

His May commencement speech at Benedictine College urged female graduates to prioritize marriage and motherhood over careers, further solidifying his traditionalist stance.

French Bishops Condemn the Performance

Butker’s criticism was echoed by the Bishops’ Conference of France, which released a scathing statement on Saturday. The group condemned the performance as “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity” and expressed deep regret over the incident. They also thanked other religious groups for their support and solidarity.

U.S. Religious Leaders Join the Chorus

In the U.S., Bishop Robert Barron of Minnesota urged parishioners to voice their disapproval of what he called a “gross mockery” of the Last Supper.

Meanwhile, Bishop Donald Hying of Madison, Wisconsin, went further, calling on Catholics to “fast and pray” in response to the performance, renewing their devotion to the Eucharist, the Sacred Heart, and the Virgin Mary.

Paris 2024 Defends the Performance

Despite the backlash, Paris 2024 organizers stood by the performance. A spokesperson for the event stressed that the tableau was never intended to offend any religious group. Instead, it aimed to celebrate community and tolerance.

They explained that Artistic Director Thomas Jolly drew inspiration from da Vinci’s famous painting to create the segment.

“He is not the first artist to reference this world-famous work,” the spokesperson said, noting that everyone from Andy Warhol to the Simpsons has done it before.
