Trapped in Melvern Wildlife Area: A Hunt Gone Wrong

The group of hunters was exploring the Melvern Wildlife Area on Sunday when two separate wildfires began spreading rapidly.

With no way out, the hunters found themselves caught between walls of flame. Smoke filled the sky, and the ash-heavy air made it impossible to see a clear path to safety.

A K9 Saves the Day: Game Warden and Dog Lead the Rescue

Game Warden Tanner Houck and his K9, Rip, were in the area when they received word of the trapped hunters.

Without hesitation, Houck and Rip began searching. It was Rip’s keen tracking skills that detected the hunters’ presence, leading the warden to two separate groups scattered across the area.

Despite treacherous conditions, the five hunters and their loyal black Labrador were guided out of harm’s way. Houck even managed to move one vehicle out of the fire’s path just in time, preventing further loss.
