Meet the Kashubians of Winona, Minnesota

My hubby Jack and I live in the beautiful river town of Winona, Minnesota. We’re right on the banks of the Mississippi River, just across from Wisconsin. One of the reasons we love being locals is the rich diversity of cultural communities here in Winona. Today, we’re exploring a group of immigrants called the Kashubians. 💝

Ever heard of the Kashubians? 🤔

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Hailing from north-central Poland, this ethnic group is rich in history, culture, and even has its own language. The Kashubian language itself is a blend of Polish and German influences and boasts two dialects—Kashubian proper and Slovincian. Isn’t language awesome?

Kashubians in the Midwest

You might be wondering, “Why are we chatting about a Polish ethnic group on a blog about the Midwest?” Here’s the scoop: Winona, Minnesota is known as the “Kashubian Capital of America.” 😮

That’s right, these incredible people found a second home in the Midwest!

The Great Migration

So how did the Kashubians get to Winona? The journey began in the mid-19th century, when Kashubians settled in two American areas—Portage County, Wisconsin, and you guessed it, our hometown… Winona!

Over the years, Winona became a stronghold for Kashubian culture. In fact, the Fourth Ward in Winona, now the East Side of town, was once a Kashubian mini-state with its own councilors and firefighters. 🚒

This part of town was even called “Warsaw” back in the olden days!

Cultural Identity of the Kashubians

While Kashubians spread their roots in cities like Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, and Milwaukee, their identity began to blend with the broader Polish American community. Yet, the distinct Kashubian culture stuck around, especially in Winona, which by 1900 had become Minnesota’s largest Polish community.

Spooky Kashubian Beliefs

The Kashubians brought more than just their language and work ethic. They also brought a kaleidoscope of beliefs that mix Christianity with folklore and legends. Think giants shaping landscapes and werewolves lurking in the shadows. 👀

If you visit a Kashubian village in Poland, you might even see pentagrams on the walls meant to ward off evil spirits. 🎃

Preserving Kashubian Legacy in Winona

Winona still cherishes its Kashubian roots today. 🏛️

The Basilica of Saint Stanislaus Kostka stands tall, a majestic tribute to the hardworking Kashubian-Polish community. Plus, the Polish Cultural Institute and Museum in Winona is a must-visit spot that beautifully captures the city’s unique history. 📸
