COVINGTON, KY – A man who attempted to swim across the Ohio River in northern Kentucky on Sunday had to be rescued, officials said.
Shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, a 911 caller reported that a man had jumped into the Ohio River in Boone County with the intention to swim across, but the caller “lost sight” of him about three-quarters of the way across the river, Boone County Water Rescue said in a statement.
Boone County is just across the border with Ohio, near Cincinnati. The man, who was not identified, tried to cross the river a short distance up river from a suspension bridge, BCWR said.
BCWR Boat 219 responded to the scene, along with Covington Fire and Cincinnati Fire.
BCWR Boat 219 deployed a rescue swimmer, who was able to retrieve the victim and transfer him to The Covington Fire Department’s Zodiac boat.
Covington Fire personnel began CPR on board the boat on the way to shore, where emergency medical personnel were waiting. BCWR said the man’s condition was unknown.
