LONDON, KY – Tires screeched to a halt as frightened drivers swerved off the highway, the echo of gunshots ringing in the air. Confusion and panic spread like wildfire along Interstate 75, cutting through the quiet evening in eastern Kentucky.
The chaos unfolded near Exit 49, just north of London, where an active shooter turned the busy stretch of road into a nightmare. Authorities scrambled, families took cover, and sirens blared into the fading daylight, leaving the once-bustling freeway eerily silent.
As the tragedy unfolded, law enforcement agencies across the state raced to locate the suspect. The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office confirmed multiple victims had been shot. While the exact number of injuries remains unclear, officials estimate that at least four to six people were harmed.
Suspect Identified, Manhunt Intensifies
Authorities swiftly named 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch as a person of interest in the shooting.
The Kentucky State Police, along with other agencies, have launched a widespread manhunt, urging anyone with information about Couch’s whereabouts to contact the London-Laurel County 911 Center. Despite the swift response, the suspect remains on the run, leaving a trail of fear in his wake.
Both directions of I-75 were shut down for about three hours following the incident. The closure extended from Exit 49 near U.S. Route 25, about nine miles north of London, Kentucky. Local residents have been urged to stay clear of the area as authorities work to secure the region.
Authorities and Community React
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear took to social media, alerting the public and reassuring them that local law enforcement had taken control of the situation.
“Kentucky, we are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County. Law enforcement has shut the interstate down in both directions at exit 49. Please avoid the area. We will provide more details once they are available,” he posted.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also confirmed their involvement, assisting state authorities in the investigation. London Mayor Randall Weddle expressed concern for his community, encouraging residents to stay safe and steer clear of the interstate while the search continues.
As the investigation continues and the manhunt presses on, the thoughts of the entire community remain with those whose lives have been forever changed by this senseless act of violence.
In the face of such tragedy, Kentucky stands united in grief, holding space for the victims and their families, as they navigate the unimaginable pain of this devastating event.
