LOUISVILLE, KY — A disturbing spike in illegal egg trafficking here in Kentucky has customs officials on high alert at Louisville’s port of entry, where agriculture specialists have intercepted three separate shipments of contraband hatching eggs in March alone.
The Growing Threat
The recent Louisville seizures reflect a broader national trend, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection reporting a 48% surge in egg confiscations along both northern and southern borders compared to the previous year. But Louisville faces a unique challenge – instead of typical food eggs, smugglers are increasingly attempting to move hatching eggs through this Midwest hub.
Inside the Egg Underground
Between March 6 and March 20, CBP Agriculture Specialists nabbed 39 hatching eggs – viable embryos meant for incubation and eventual hatching of various bird species. These eggs, intended for everything from common poultry to exotic racing pigeons, pose severe risks as potential carriers of devastating avian diseases like Newcastle and High Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
A Global Operation
The seized shipments originated from multiple countries, including Turkey and Romania, with intended destinations spanning from New York to Nevada and even Costa Rica. This appears to be part of a larger pattern – throughout 2024, Louisville officials intercepted 25 separate shipments totaling 519 eggs from various nations including Turkey, Belgium, Romania, and Singapore.
The Stakes
These eggs represent more than just contraband – they constitute a direct threat to American agriculture and food security. Strict regulations classify hatching eggs as live animals, subjecting them to rigorous controls designed to protect U.S. food systems from foreign diseases.
Ongoing Vigilance
As part of their regular operations, CBP personnel screen incoming international passengers, mail, and cargo for various prohibited items including narcotics and weapons. The agency maintains its mission through collaborative efforts and innovative approaches to protect national security interests.
