JACKSONVILLE, FL – A simple desire to capture a moment in Florida turned deadly when a driver slowed to take a photo of a “Welcome to Florida” sign, triggering a tragic crash. The decision resulted in the loss of three young lives and has left a community grappling with the devastating aftermath.
The Tragic Incident
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 1, 2023, as Marvin Redondo-Funes, 25, and his family were traveling from New York to Florida. As they crossed the state line into Florida on Interstate 95, Redondo-Funes allegedly slowed to a crawl—just one or two miles per hour—to take a photo of the iconic “Welcome to Florida” sign.
A vehicle traveling behind Redondo-Funes didn’t see the slowdown in time and collided with the car at full speed. Tragically, the backseat of the car was designed for only three passengers, but four children were seated there—only one of whom was wearing a seatbelt. Three of the children died at the scene, while the fourth was rushed to the hospital, where he died two days later.
Both Redondo-Funes and his girlfriend, as well as the driver of the other vehicle, were fortunate enough to escape with only minor injuries.
Arrest and Charges
On November 2, 2024, Redondo-Funes was arrested and extradited to Florida, where he was booked into Nassau County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including four counts of aggravated manslaughter of a child and driving with a suspended or revoked license causing great bodily injury. These charges stem from the fatal crash that resulted in the death of his family members.
Redondo-Funes is being held on a bond of $270,016, and he is scheduled to appear in court on December 6, 2024.
The Cost of a Split-Second Decision
Redondo-Funes’ decision to slow down for a photo, while seemingly harmless at the time, has now led to one of the most heartbreaking crashes in recent memory. The consequences of this momentary lapse in judgment will have a lifelong impact on the families involved. With the legal process underway, the focus remains on the tragic loss of life and the deep emotional toll on those left behind.
The grief left in the wake of this tragedy is immeasurable, and the pain felt by the families will linger for years to come. As they try to heal, they may find some comfort in the words of Matthew 5:4: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” In moments like these, we are reminded of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment, especially with those we love.
