WAITE PARK, MN – Spanning 65 miles through the picturesque counties of Stearns and Todd in central Minnesota, the Lake Wobegon Trail is a 10-foot wide, bituminous surfaced pathway that offers a delightful experience for hikers and bikers alike.

This trail, stretching from Waite Park to Osakis, with an extension from Albany to Holdingford and the Stearns/Morrison County line, showcases the region’s natural splendor and fascinating historical legacy.

🌿 From Rivers to Prairies: A Diverse Landscape

Starting your journey at Rivers Edge Park in Waite Park, you’ll cross the Sauk River and pedal along natural areas and farm fields en route to St. Joseph. As you continue, you’ll encounter the old town of Collegeville, once a bustling community with a popular train depot, boarding house, post office, and store. Take a detour to Saint John’s University, just a 2.5-mile side trip from Collegeville, to explore its stunning campus.

In Avon, you’ll find a range of amenities, including shelters, bathrooms, a water fountain, and a two-storied lookout tower/shelter that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The next 5.5 miles showcase some of the most beautiful scenery along the trail, with lush woods, prairies, and lakes. Keep an eye out for the enchanting Lady’s Slipper orchids in May and June.

🌉 Exploring Holdingford and Beyond

Just west of Albany, a spur of the Lake Wobegon Trail leads north for nine miles to Holdingford, home to Minnesota’s longest covered bridge. This spur connects with the paved Soo Line Trail at the county line, offering serene views of the natural landscape. The Soo Line Trail continues through Bowlus, crosses the Mississippi River at Blanchard Dam, and ends at a trailhead on Highway 10.

🏞️ Freeport: The Birthplace of Lake Wobegon

West of Albany lies Freeport, the birthplace of disgraced humorist Garrison Keillor’s fictional Lake Wobegon. It’s said that Keillor drew inspiration for some of his fictional places from this charming town. Continue west for 5.7 miles to reach Melrose, where you can visit the Melrose Area Museum and find the official Melrose Trailhead near the Melrose Feed Mill.

🏰 Literary Connections in Sauk Centre

Upon arriving in Sauk Centre, take a detour to explore the Original Main Street, made famous by Sinclair Lewis in his novel, “Main Street.” Further along, you’ll find a city trail leading to Sinclair Lewis Park, where you can access camping facilities, bathrooms, and parking.

🌄 The Final Stretch to Osakis

The 12-mile stretch between Sauk Centre and Osakis veers into the countryside, passing through the quaint town of West Union before reaching its destination. Just outside of Osakis, you can continue onto the Central Lakes State Trail, a 55-mile paved trail that leads to Fergus Falls.

🔗 Trail Connections and Future Developments

The Lake Wobegon Trail connects to several other trails in the region, including the Soo Line Trail at the Stearns/Morrison County line north of Albany. Plans are in the works to link Sauk Centre to Browerville, and the natural-surfaced Dairyland Trail is expected to reach Albany in the future, connecting with Brooten.

In 2022, the Lake Wobegon and Central Lakes Trails were designated as part of the US Bicycle Route 20 (USBR 20) between Moorhead and the junction of USBR 45 and the Mississippi River Trail (MRT) in St. Cloud.
